The 360 digital ecosystem

What is a 360 digital ecosystem and why is one channel not enough?

A 360 digital ecosystem is the set of places where your customer discovers you, compares you, verifies you and buys from you. What it includes, how it is measured and the most common mistake when building one.

A 360 digital ecosystem is the set of places where a customer discovers, compares, verifies and buys a brand: social media, Google, marketplaces or OTAs, reviews, the own website, WhatsApp and, recently, the answers of AI assistants. It is called 360 because it is worked on in full: you do not depend on one channel and you are relevant in each.

That is the definition. What follows is why it matters and how to know if you have one.

A customer’s real journey is not a straight line

A typical traveler discovers a destination on Instagram, searches for the hotel on Google, compares it on Booking, reads the reviews, enters the website to see if there is something better, writes on WhatsApp to ask about parking and books —direct or through the OTA— two days later. Seven touchpoints, four or five per booking, and at any of them you can be the option or not exist.

A B2B customer does something similar with other names: LinkedIn, Google, a Google Business listing, referrals, the website, a form or a WhatsApp, and a quote.

What neither of them does is come in through a single channel and buy. That is why a business that lives off a single channel does not have a strategy: it has a dependency.

Presence is not ecosystem

Most businesses are in five or six of those places. Very few know what position they hold in each against their competition. That is the difference between presence and ecosystem: the first is installed once, the second is measured every day.

Three signs that you have presence and not ecosystem:

  • You know how many bookings each channel brings, but not where you appear within it. Booking brings 60% of your bookings and you do not know whether you are in position 4 or 40 in your destination.
  • The channels do not talk to each other. The good Google review does not appear on your site; the guest who booked through the OTA never gets a reason to come back direct; the one who asked on WhatsApp and did not book never hears from you again.
  • Measurement is split. Marketing measures clicks, sales measures bookings, revenue measures rate, and nobody has the full row: where they came in, what they saw, how long we took to answer and what they paid.

How an ecosystem is measured

With one question per channel, on two axes: are you there? and do they choose you? The first is easy. The second is the one nobody looks at: what position you appear in against the others when your customer searches for what you sell, in that channel, in your city.

When you put those answers in a column, this is what comes out: a list of channels and, next to each one, either a position or a question mark. The column of question marks is the diagnostic. Every ”?” is a channel where you are, you invest, and you do not know whether you come up at the top or on page four.

The most common mistake when building one

Fighting a channel. Almost always the OTAs: “we want to depend less on Booking”. It is understandable and it is the wrong approach. Booking is where your customer is already searching; withdrawing or neglecting it does not bring them to your site, it sends them to the hotel next door. An ecosystem does not remove channels: it optimizes them so that within each one they choose you, and at the same time makes direct booking the best option for whoever already knows you.

What an ecosystem does to a brand

It makes it, in this order, visible, relevant, considered, chosen, bought, recommended and remembered. None of the seven is skipped: nobody recommends what they did not buy and nobody buys what they did not see. The method’s job is for your business to go through all seven without depending on luck.

If you want to see your column, the diagnostic draws it in ninety seconds. And the long explanation of the concept is on the 360 digital ecosystem page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 360 digital ecosystem the same as 360 marketing?

No. 360 marketing usually means "we do everything": ads, social media, design, email. An ecosystem is a structure: the channels connected to each other and measured together, with a known position in each. You can have 360 marketing and no ecosystem.

How many channels does a business need?

The ones its customer uses to decide, which are usually between four and seven. It is not about being on all of them but about not depending on one and knowing where you stand in each of the ones that matter.

How do I know if my ecosystem works?

If you can answer, channel by channel, what position you hold against your competition and how much sales each one brings. If in any of them the answer is "I do not know", there is a question mark costing money.

Which of these are you missing?
